Issue #511 - Sunday, January 30, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- If you're at least a little lazy (like me), you're probably excited by the idea of being able to mix your nutrients in advance so you don't have to do it later. But how long in advance can you make nutrient water before it goes bad? Today, we're going to give you the low-down on the shelf-life of you pre-mixed nutrient water. Plus learn how to make it last for weeks!
- My last harvest has been dried and jarred. I'm letting the humidity stabilize for a day before I take the dry weight but I've got a sneak peak of the harvest in jars!
- The "Trophy Pics of the Week" section you know and love is back to normal after a week that was essentially an insect showcase. This week, you can prepare a cup of coffee and relax as these pics are nothing but beautiful plants and great color. Everything is right with the world this Sunday!

How Long Can I Store Nutrient Water?

How long before nutrient water goes bad?
If youβre growing cannabis plants with nutrients, you may wonder, βHow long does a nutrient solution last before it goes bad?β Will old nutrient water hurt your plants?
Making nutrient water can be time-consuming so you might want to make extra for the future. How long can it be stored before it needs to be tossed?
A few factors determine how long your nutrient water lasts before you should make more.
- Lasts a long time in a closed container with minimal air β Nutrient water is best stored in a container thatβs filled to the top (as little air as possible) with the cap is on tight
- Countdown starts when nutrient water is stored with air β Once youβve used up some of the water, there will be air in the container even if you close it tight. This closed environment with air and nutrient water creates a perfect home for microorganisms that make your water go bad
- Mineral-based nutrients last longer β Organic nutrients tend to go bad faster than mineral-based nutrients, but all nutrient water will go bad once the wrong environment is formed (microorganisms like nutrient water too!)
As long as your container is filled to the top and closed tight, nutrient water acts a lot like milk. It stays fresh a long time before you open the container. But just like milk, once itβs opened youβve started a countdown until it goes bad. Also like milk, if nutrient water smells bad or looks different, itβs bad regardless of the βbest byβ date or how long itβs been stored.
So your nose and eyes are the final judges. If nutrient water looks weird or doesnβt pass the smell test, itβs time to make more.
Plants react poorly to bad nutrient water
How to maximize nutrient solution storage
Mixing nutrient water is time-consuming but making 1 gallon takes a similar amount of work as 5 gallons. That means you can save time by making a lot of nutrient water, then water plants as needed. This section will teach you how to make your nutrient water last as long as possible so you donβt have to make it as often.
1.) Cap on or off?
It may not seem like this would matter much, but the cap of the nutrient container actually makes a difference when storing nutrient solution. Hereβs what to do to maximize...

Grow Journal Update: Buds in Jars!
|
|
I grew two tents with identical autoflowering strains under ES300 LED grow lights. The plants in one tent got topped and trained, while the other was left untouched (plants only got water from seed to harvest)
|
At harvest they looked like this....
The untrained tent went CRAZY! These plants got nothing but nutrient water from seed to harvest. Otherwise I didn't touch them. This is how they naturally grew. The Sour Diesel Auto plant on the right was taller than me!
In the other tent, I topped and trained all the autoflowering plants to keep them short and flat. The purpose of this type of training is to control height
and increase the bud density and size. All the plants are in 6 foot tall tents but there was over a foot of extra space above the light in this one. That means these plants could have been grown in a smaller 2'x4'x5'
foot grow tent (60 cm x 120 cm x 150 cm) with extra room to spare. If height is a concern, make sure to top and train your plants!
The question is, which tent yielded more? At the time of this writing I have just taken the plants down from drying, trimmed them, and jarred all the buds. Before the weigh-in, I like to wait at least a day or two to make sure the humidity
stabilizes in every jar at 60% RH or lower to ensure buds are fully dry (I don't want extra water weight to skew the weight results).
I have to say the yields looks remarkably even so far... However, the buds from plants that were topped and trained (jars on the right in this picture) seemed a bit more dense and thick while trimming overall. As a result they may have better bag appeal.
I'm really curious to see what the final weights end up being. I have a feeling the trained tent is going to edge the untrained tent out for weight since the buds are more solid and they filled the same number of jars.
I'll have the weights for you next week, and after that I'm going to send all the buds to a lab to get tested for THC, CBD, and terpene levels. Stay tuned!

Beware the ol' Scam & Scram!
|
|
Actual footage of a cute little thief stealing roughly $27,000 worth of bitcoin.
They ride off into the night with bags of stolen money...
The year is 2022 and scamming is big business. How big, you ask? Let me drop just two stats:
- Valuation of entire legal weed industry in 2021: ~$20 billion
- Amount lost to phone scams alone in 2021: ~$30 billion
I don't want to scare you, but I hope that seeing these numbers will help to illuminate why these scammers are willing to go through such crazy lengths to trick you. If something seems scammy to you, have someone else take a look at it.
A couple of weeks ago, I found out that someone close to me was in the midst of being scammed by someone via Facebook. They thought something was fishy and luckily, they told me about it before anything really bad happened. Their pride was bruised a bit, but at least they didn't lose a bunch of money and personal information, too.
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.).
