Issue #532 - Sunday, June 26, 2022
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- The vegetative stage and the flowering stage are opposites of each other in a way. Vegetating plants are hardy and resistant against deficiencies. On the other hand, flowering plants need you to make the perfect environment for them like lil babies. In this newsletter, we'll show you how to properly care for even the most finnicky of flowering plants so they come out looking great!
- Check out the gorgeous buds growing in my house grow space right now!
- Ya'll make me proud. Every week I look through a ton of pictures and it genuinely makes me happy to see what you all are able to produce. If you've sent in pics, thanks! We love them! If you haven't yet, don't worry, you'll get to a point where I bet you'll want to show off your pics.

How to Stop
Flowering Stage Nutrient Deficiencies
🚫🌳🤒🚫
|
|
Your cannabis plants are growing buds! But wait… what’s that?
Yellow leaves, brown spots, and other random deficiencies are common flowering stage problems
This happened to me as a beginner cannabis grower. Every time I initiated the flowering stage, my once-healthy green plants would start getting nutrient deficiencies. What is the cause of this frustrating problem?
Why do so many cannabis plants get nutrient deficiencies in the flowering stage?
Why the flowering stage? Cannabis plants are tougher in the vegetative stage. With new leaves growing every day, no individual leaf ever has to work too hard. The plant is focused on growth and nothing else. Vegetative plants really “grow like a weed”. Yet as the flowering stage goes on, plants stop making new leaves and start focusing on buds. Each leaf works long, hard hours, and plants stop replacing them. Sick or discolored
leaves remain until harvest, and if you don’t fix the issue, those leaves die the problem spreads to new parts of the plant. What could be a small problem in the vegetative stage can slowly take over your whole plant in the flowering stage.
Unfortunately, cannabis plants are more sensitive when they’re making buds. But never fear! This article explains exactly what’s causing your problem and how to fix it.
Note: All 3 of these pictures were caused by too high or too low pH at the roots. Incorrect pH is the most common reason for flowering stage deficiencies, which is why it’s first on the list below. However, there are many other factors that cause or contribute to flowering stage leaf problems
such as a poor environment or incorrect plant care.
Today I’ll explain the most common reasons for flowering stage deficiencies with pictures, so you can fix your problems and once again start smiling every time you see your garden.
1.) Plant Care
Plant care refers to the daily care you give your plants. Let’s cover the most common plant care issues...

A few weeks until harvest – June 25, 2022
The two remaining plants for this defoliation experiment are chugging along. Maybe 2-3 weeks left until harvest? It’s hard to say because I haven’t grown this strain before. Strains can surprise you by either taking a long time or finishing up quickly;.
The buds look incredible so far!

"First time growing since the 70s and I'm in love. Thanks."
~Danklin
I bet the weed has changed dramatically since the 70s. I started growing in the mid 2000s and some of the weed these days almost seems like a different plant. I love it! ~Sirius

"Want to start by saying I love this site. I’m on my 4th grow and never would have made it here without you guys. I think you guys should do a day-by-day drying tutorial."
~Johnathan
I've honestly never thought about doing a day-by-day drying tutorial, but it'sa good idea! 💡 ~Sirius
"Hello,
I wanted to thank you guys again as I think my first plant is looking very healthy so far. This website has been the primary reason for that. My first plant is a Northern Lights auto-flower from https://weed-seeds.com/ (I bought them before being aware of your seed provider recommendations). While I'm very new to this, it seems like auto-flowers are becoming increasingly popular. One suggestion I had that I think would have really helped me starting out would be to differentiate any time there
is a difference between autos and non-autos.[...]Thanks again for everything you guys do!"
~Ryan
Hmmm...that's a good point. It's easy to forget that you already know things, and that makes it wasyy to accidentally skip steps or explanations. We used to call this the "Curse of Knowledge". We'll work on being more clear about that in the future. Growing autos when you meant to grow photos (or vice versa) can be a frustrating experience and we don't wanna put anyone through that. 👍 ~Sirius

"This plant is about 3 weeks old, can somebody tell me what's going on here?"
~threepets
It looks like that because it's a male plant and, unfortunately, it won't grow buds. If it's any consolation, it's a beautiful male plant. ~Sirius

"Sativa Star (AKA Godzilla), 9 weeks flower. Thick, dense colas that smell like lemon and mango. Not crazy frosty, but she's got sugar! Organic grow using recycled soil amended with Down to Earth 4-4-4, bat guano, crab meal, seabird guano, worm castings, and rock phosphate. Learned my lesson when I grew this strain last year and double topped it to keep it a manageable size. Only concern is humidity and bud rot, so I check her twice a day
now that the dew point is so high. Love you guys!"
~Userbosco
Well done! Your plant looks incredible and you took a fantastic picture. 🅰➕ ~Sirius
Wow, these are some huge, healthy colas! Nebula loves that strain. It's not often you see cannabis plants that legitimately seem to be "loitering". Folks, be careful if you ever see chunky plants lurking in your tent like in the pictures below. ~Sirius
"Some harvest pics of a couple autos I had finish up."
~Michael C.
Wait, autos?! I remember there was a trend that kinda died down where everyone was growing "Super Autos" which got much bigger than standard autoflowering strains. These autos you grew would take the lunch money of those autos! 😨 ~Sirius
Scammers: "I'm an Honest Person!"
|
|
What do you call someone calling from India on behalf of the IRS?
|
Fact: Scams were invented in 1663 by "Scammy Liar-liar Thompson"
That might not be true, but it's no more ridiculous than the lies that are commonly used to trick people out of hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are many Youtube channels where people document such scams, and some of them would make your jaw drop... because they work all the time! Unfortunately, many people just aren't prepared for the types of tactics used by modern scammers.
The best defense against these types of social engineering scams is to stay alert and know what a scam looks like. Even if you don't know what a scam looks like, being wary can offer some protection that might save all your hard-earned cash. If you feel uncomfortable at all about a financial interaction, especially with a company you can't hold accountable, jump ship!
Remember when it comes to buying seeds: Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone
call, email, etc.).

- How to Set up an Automatic Watering System for Cannabis Plants - This started out as us needing a solution to being away from our plants for a few days. The end result is a cool way to set up a plant to be watered automatically for as long as nutrient water is available. It
really is cannabis growing on easy more, especially if you combine with autos.

How to Research & Find the Right Strain - We've always been proponents of the mantra "Start with good genetics". As time as gone on, this has only proven
itself to as true as we thought. Even when the conditions are subpar, a good strain can (and will) make the difference between a happy smoker, and a sad toker.

- How to Check pH & Stop Cannabis Nutrient Deficiencies - Proper pH management is the solution to many of the problems growers run into.
If it's not bugs or overwatering, pH probably has something to do with the problem showing up. pH is essentially the Keyser Söze of cannabis problems; you didn't see it coming, but it was the real culprit all along.

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
