Why Cannabis Yields Aren’t Important (Anymore)
|
|
The dry weight of your cannabis buds (“yields”) used to be one of the most important numbers growers paid attention to. But yields are most important for people trying to sell. For most home growers, what you want is enough weed and excellent bud quality, not necessarily the max amount of buds you can grow. Why? Because most home growers would rather have 8 ounces of incredible weed than 16 ounces of subpar
weed. Home growers usually don’t need to sacrifice quality to get the yields they want You’ll notice that the newer trendier cannabis strains in the United States for home growers typically have middling to low yields, especially compared to European strains from the early 2010s, which were heavily yield-focused. In these newer strains, buds stay small and hard like nuggets, as opposed to creating huge enormous “colas” of buds. Older and European strains tend to produce bigger, looser buds with medium- to-high bud potency Newer and American strains tend to produce smaller, tighter bud nuggets with very high (20% or more) levels of THC Plants of these newer strains may produce just 2-3 ounces per plant, whereas “high yield” strains may produce 5 ounces or more per plant in the same conditions. This Ultimate cannabis plant produced double the yield as all the other
strains in the tent, but buds ended up being the least favorite. So after all the other buds had been smoked, we still had tons of Ultimate buds left. The secret to not caring about yields is to get the basics right: start with a good setup, keep a suitable environment,
and train plants to grow multiple buds per plant. This ensures that even if you grow with the lowest-yielding strains, you will still produce more than enough weed for most people. For many cannabis growers, a few ounces of weed per month is more than enough, especially when combined with the fact that many growers also use their “trim” to make edibles. I don’t know about you, but I tend to go through my weed slower when I also have tons of tinctures, canna caps, oils, hash, kief, weed gummies, and other goodies around the house. Low-yielding strains still produce plenty of weed if you use a good grow
setup and provide the right environment in the flowering stage. I’d rather get 3 ounces of these buds per plant than 6 ounces per plant of mediocre weed.
Is the Kratky Method Good for Growing Cannabis?
|
The Kratky method is a “set and forget” hydroponic system that’s amazing at growing lettuce. This buttercrunch lettuce was grown via the Kratky method. Unlike some other types of plants, lettuce roots are forgiving and will thrive even in unmoving water.

PAR vs ePAR light meters: What is the difference?
|
PAR vs ePAR Meters: Does it matter? PAR (short for “Photosynthetically Active Radiation”) describes the spectrum of light/radiation that can be used by plants for photosynthesis. Typically PAR is defined as the light spectrum between 400 to 700 nanometers. You’ve probably seen a light spectrum PAR chart before.
|
A “PAR meter” directly measures how much light is being delivered in this range. This range is roughly the same as the range of visible light for humans, but not exactly the same. So where did ePAR meters come from? Newer research by NASA (as well as commercial cannabis growers) demonstrate that plants can actually photosynthesize light in the 700-750nm
(far red) range, too. That’s why new PAR meters measure between the range of 400-750nm and are called “ePAR” meters. Answer: An ePAR meter measures light all the way up to 750nm, while a regular PAR meter only goes to 700nm. Keep reading to learn more about PAR and
ePAR meters, plus discover a $35 alternative that works almost as well!
Cannabis Legalization: Congrats Maryland and Missouri!
|
Two states legalized weed this week in the United States election that took place on Tuesday.
|
- Maryland - Maryland voters approved Question 4 to legalize marijuana in the state. Beginning on July 1, 2023 adults will be legally permitted to possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis and/or 12 grams of
cannabis concentrates and will be permitted to grow up to two cannabis plants in their homes for their own personal use.
- Missouri - Missouri voters decided in favor of Amendment 3 legalizing the possession, cultivation, and licensed retail sale of cannabis for those ages 21 and older. Beginning on December 8, 2022, adults will be permitted to
possess up to three ounces of cannabis and to home-cultivate up to six flowering plants, six immature plants, and six plants under 14 inches for personal use.
Both states had a medical marijuana program, but soon weed will be legal for all adults 21 and older. I'm happy for residents of both states! Not in the US? Where is Growing Legal in Other Parts of the World? Special mention for the psychedelic lovers! - Colorado decriminalized magic mushrooms - On
Tuesday, Colorado became the first state to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms for people 21 and older. They also voted to create state-regulated centers where participants can experience the drug. Have we finally turned the tide on psychedelic legalization? I hope so.

"Any one no what is going on here?" ~Gazzzza
|
Hey Gazzzza, All I see is a gorgeous grow room full of a ton of awesome healthy weed plants in hydroponic buckets. At this point in the grow, just focus on giving plants the right nutrients and pH (since you're in hydroponics and plants look healthy I know you're already on top of that), keep the grow room from getting hot, control the humidity if
it's getting humid during lights off, and otherwise wait until harvest. Looking real good! ~Nebula Haze "The pix is this years "GOT WEED?" and I'm not done yet!.(another record harvest this year..SOMEBODY STOP ME!)..I still got three 20 gallon totes full of medium & little, stalky buds to clip, sort and pack..And, I've already been in "trim jail" for over a month..ARRRRRGH!" ~Mr.
K Hey Mr. K, Now that's a lot of weed! I have spent a lot of time in "trim jail" (the affectionate grower's term for being stuck trimming weed all day after a large harvest). I definitely feel your pain. It can be long but the feeling of accomplishment at the end is second to none! ~Nebula

Did you know people often scratch their nose when they're lying? Too bad you can't see someone's expression when they talk through DMs.
|
Did you know that when someone is uncomfortable they often scratch at their nose? That's why liars often scratch their nose right as they're telling you a lie. Easy to spot in real life, but unfortunately if someone is lying over the internet you can't look at their body language. Other reasons people may scratch their nose: they feel
uncomfortable, dislike the person they're talking about, or perhaps they don't like you. They also may just have a genuine nose itch. So if you see the nose scratch it's not necessarily a lie, but it's not a great sign if you keep seeing it. Online, since you can't see body language... Make sure to watch out for scams, especially seed scams! Remember: Real seed
businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email, etc.). Recommended Cannabis Seed Sources
