Which Nutrients Are Best For Growing Cannabis?
|
|
What’s the difference between cannabis nutrients? Once you start growing cannabis, figuring out the best nutrients for your setup can be confusing. There are many nutrient companies and each company creates multiple lines of nutrients and supplements for different purposes. The abundance of cannabis nutrient options can be overwhelming As a cannabis grower, your goal is to give your plants the right amount of nutrients at the right time. There are two main life stages for cannabis plants (vegetative stage and flowering stage). Each stage has different nutrient requirements. Luckily, many nutrient companies make great products even though they’re all using different formulas and techniques. Here’s how they differ: - Nutrient Ratios – Each brand has different nutrient ratios they believe are optimal for each stage of growth.
- Ingredients – There are many different combinations of chemical and organic compounds that can add up to the same nutrient ratios. Each compound reacts differently with the others. This means you can see two nutrient bottles with the exact same NPK ratios on the bottle (3 numbers on the front), but they will
provide somewhat different levels of nutrients to your plants. The ingredients used to get those nutrient ratios determine whether nutrients are considered organic or synthetic. Note: NPK stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K), and are the 3 nutrients your plants need the most.
- Designed for Soil, Coco, or Hydro – It’s really important to match your growing medium with your nutrients. “Soil” nutrients are different from “Hydroponic” nutrients so make
sure you’re getting the right kind. Coco coir is generally considered a type of hydroponics when it comes to nutrients, though there are also nutrients specifically designed for coco coir. Typically, hydroponic nutrients contain everything a plant needs to grow and can be used in any grow medium, while soil nutrients typically only provide some nutrients and expect your plant to be able to get the trace nutrients in the soil.
Important Tips on Cannabis Supplements - Don’t confuse supplements for nutrients. If the NPK ratios printed on the front of the bottle are really low (like 0.2-0.2-0.1), it means that this product is some type of supplement. Base nutrients provide all the necessary NPK and micronutrients for healthy growth,
so supplements are not necessary for plants to thrive. Some supplements are helpful, but going overboard may cause unwanted reactions or burn your plant. Do you need supplements to grow great weed?
- Use nutrients and supplements from the same company or brand to minimize unexpected interactions. Combining nutrients and supplements from
different companies greatly increases the chance of unhappy plants. It’s also a good idea to only add one new supplement at a time and watch how plants react before adding anything else new or different. If this is your first grow, try to pick just one or two supplements that appeal to you. It’s easy to go overboard. Nutrient companies will happily sell you supplements you don’t actually need.
Now that you understand the basics, are you ready to learn how to figure out the best
marijuana nutrients for your setup? Examples of Great Cannabis Nutrients This list of nutrients has been extensively tested by real marijuana growers and each system is known to produce great results. These are examples of trustworthy nutrient brands that are guaranteed to work well for growing cannabis when used properly.

What About Cannabis Supplements?
|
|
The Botanicare "Sweet" line is an example of a supplement that can sweeten the smell of your buds Which cannabis supplements are actually necessary? Here’s the thing. You don't need supplements. Cannabis growers only need base nutrients, and that’s it. You can get all the way to harvest with the most amazing and top-quality buds ever, with even cheap base nutrients and nothing else. However, obviously, it’s more complicated than just that. One thing I’ll say, and when
you talk to growers who have tried a lot of different nutrient lines, you’ll often hear this… Your environment and growing skill have a MUCH bigger effect on your final results than the specific nutrient system or
supplements you use. When I’ve tried different nutrient brands, I’ve had a really difficult time telling the difference. Experienced growers (especially growers who have done actual testing) will usually tell you the same thing. However, there are some supplements that work for specific situations, and I've broken it all down for you! Which cannabis supplements actually work?

5 Secrets to Controlling Heat Indoors
|
As I just mentioned, a great growing environment is even more important to your results than the particular nutrient brand you use. So what should you focus on? One of the biggest problems growers deal with is too much heat from their grow lights.

Too much heat can seriously harm your plants

"Re: your report on the 2022 cannabis conference in Las Vegas. Thank you for sharing your experience! The GrowWeedEasy.com site is a very valuable resource for home growers, thanks to articles like these. Keep up the good work!" ~Firsttime Homegrower Hey Homegrower, thank you for this email. I spent that week asking every commercial grower every question I could think of, and put my heart and soul into writing that report. It is so gratifying to know that growers are reading and learning the insider information I was able to uncover. ~Nebula

"Loved your article on the perpetual harvest!! This is what I do with one difference. I use a 4x4 for my veg and sprouts and I grow autos in there. I plant 4 autos every month and harvest 4 every month. I have 8 or 9 photos vegging in there while there are 8 or 9 photos in the flowering tent (12x12 light cycle). I average only 4 oz of good dried buds on the autos but get about 16oz out of the photos every 2 months. Love your site and the forums are super helpful. One suggestion; right now is a great time to grab seeds from UK seed banks with the $ so strong against the £. Cheers:)" ~KC Hey KC, thanks for sharing your experience with your own perpertual harvest. It sounds like you're getting great results. And that's an excellent tip for growers in the US. Right now the US dollar is unusually strong against many other currencies so it's a great time for Americans to get excellent deals on seeds from overseas
seed banks. ~Nebula Haze "Hi Nebula Haze, I am well in to my second-ever grow. I look forward to your news letter every week. I have learned so much from all your site. Thank you for all the great info. Hope to send in some photos of my Purple Thai plants at harvest time. Keep up all the great
work." ~Billfish Hey Billfish, Thank you for this wonderful note. I can't wait to see your Purple Thai plants. I'll look out for your email. Happy growing! ~Nebula

"I am watching this plant as the top of the leaves are plum, the underside red. It is fattening up."
|
"The contrast between it and the green one is very obvious. Same strain. Grown in super soil and watered both the same." "Pics of the red plant under the leaves." ~Major Stamen Wow Major Stamen, these plants look downright delicious. This is such a great example of showing how much of a difference the genetics make to your results even when growing plants exactly the same. Those red leaves pictures are absolutely magical. Thanks for sending these pics in, I know they'll be helpful to other growers! ~Nebula
Haze "Hi there! It’s funny you’re discussing cannabis mutations this week. I’ve attached a pic of 4 GSC Extreme at 2 1/2 weeks, taken yesterday. What’s wrong with this picture?! 🤣 There are two growth tips under those 4 single blade leaves so I’m topping her there and will see what happens." ~Mark Check out that bottom right plant! This is such a cool pictures because it shows one mutated
plant next to 3 "normal" plants. I think that really helps you see just how different the leaves look. I actually once had a Royal Cookies plant grow in a similar way, and I did the same as you - I topped the plant right under the top
single-blade leaves. It actually grew a little funny its whole life, but ended up producing some excellent weed. Keep us posted with how it goes. ~Nebula Haze

The moment you realize the seeds you bought off Instagram are never coming
|
"Hey, I sent you money 5 weeks ago but haven't got my seeds yet. What's going on?" ~Your direct message to the "seller" which gets left on read. It hurts to send a direct message that never get a response. It hurts even more when you gave that person money and they were supposed to send you seeds! The cannabis industry is unfortunately full of seed scams. Remember... Real seed businesses don't contact you. They let you contact them. If anyone messages you to sell you seeds on social media, look out! It's possible they will take your payment and send nothing. Always take a second to think before sending money to anyone, especially if they contact you (whether by DM, text message, phone call, email,
etc.). Recommended Cannabis Seed Sources
These sources have gotten great reviews from our readers:
- Seed Supreme – California, United States
- ILGM (I Love Growing Marijuana) – California, United States
- Herbies Seeds – Europe (seemingly out of the UK and Spain)

"Growing cannabis can be a relaxing hobby in and of itself, but it also saves you money and keeps you from having to deal with shady characters. Cannabis is much easier to grow than people give it credit for, and growing in water doesn't increase the difficulty much, if any. But whether you want to grow in water, coco, or a different medium, we'll show you how easy it can be!"
