This drying & curing marijuana tutorial is part of our “how to harvest cannabis” series: Flushing > Harvest > Trimming > Drying & Curing Why Do Cannabis Growers Dry and “Cure” Cannabis
Buds? Harvest time! Your buds are ready for harvest, yet your job as a grower is not quite over yet. For the best quality buds, you still need to put your newly harvested buds through the cannabis drying and curing process. (When do I harvest?) Dry Buds – Hang cannabis buds upside down by their stems for several days (most common drying method). Cannabis buds drying in a grow tent.
Curing – Put dried cannabis buds in jars for 2+ weeks for the “curing” process. Why? Curing improves bud density, smell, and perceived potency. Cannabis buds curing in glass jars.
After curing in jars for a few weeks, buds smell better, are denser, and feel more potent to smoke.
Overview of Drying and Curing CannabisIn order to ensure the best quality for your freshly harvested marijuana, you must prepare your buds with the process known as drying and curing. The process starts with drying cannabis buds slowly in a controlled environment. Fresh cannabis buds are mostly water, so you need to dry buds before they can be smoked.
Drying cannabis properly also reduces the chance of unwanted hay smell. After buds are dry, it’s time for curing. Buds are put in glass mason jars, which are “burped” once a day for a few weeks. This may seem strange, but it lets a few specific natural plant processes occur, which
significantly improves the overall quality of buds. The drying and curing process causes weed buds to become denser, smell better and for effects after smoking to feel more potent and pleasant. Drying and curing cannabis right also helps prevent cannabis harshness when smoking. There are lots of benefits, and it’s highly recommended not to skip drying and curing your marijuana harvest. At the very least, try some buds before and after, so you can see how big a difference it makes. Optimal Cannabis Drying Environment: Room Temperature – 60-70°F (16-21°C) 50-60% Humidity Optimal Environment for Cannabis in Jars (Curing): Room Temperature – Around 70°F (21°C) 55-62% Humidity

Get Your Cannabis Curing Supplies!Get the tools you need to cure buds perfectly every time! - Wide-Mouth Glass Jars - Quart-size (32 oz) glass jars are the recommended size for curing weed. Available in grocery stores, home improvement stores, craft or hobby stores, and more. Each jar holds about 1 ounce of dried weed. Get "wide mouth" jars so your hands fit inside.
- Mini-Hygrometers - Measure the humidity in the jar. Amazon sells 2-packs and 8-packs (or more) of mini hygrometers for cheap, letting you put one in each jar.
- Humidity Control Pack - These automatically control the humidity to keep it in the perfect range. Take the guessing out of curing by adding a humidity control pack in with your weed.
Ideal Humidity for Curing - ~60% RH
Some Strains are More Affected by Curing Than OthersOver the years, we've noticed that some cannabis strains seem to be more affected by the curing process than others. For example, we grew some Full Moon and Purple Ghost Candy late last year. Both strains seemed to be at about similar potency after the initial 2-week cure. But how was the bud quality after curing for longer?
We waited a full 6 months. Then last week, we cracked open a jar from both strains and conducted some smoke tests (my favorite kind of testing). The Full Moon was an excellent smoke, smelling spicy and unique, and effects were just as potent as before. A beautiful curing job. However, the Purple Ghost Candy was unbelievably potent after curing this long. In fact, after
smoking some, both Sirius and I were not able to get anything done for the rest of the day lol It was a wonderful time, but I was pretty surprised at the extent of the effects. And this is coming from seasoned smokers! The 6-month cured Purple Ghost Candy seems to be the strongest weed I've smoked yet, even compared to some strains that initially tested at higher THC. Obviously there is something about the entourage effect after curing that makes Purple Ghost Candy so unbelievably
strong...
The Purple Ghost Candy buds were lovely immediately after harvest. But after curing 6 months, the buds are out-of-this-world potent.
Here were the buds after curing for only 2 weeks. You'll notice they still have a lot of green.
Here is the same weed after curing for 6 months in a jar with a 58% Humidity Pack. Most of the green is gone now. Effects have gone
from regular "strong" to "mind-bendingly psychedelic".

Who is your favorite strain breeder? Starting with the right genetics is key to getting good results growing weed at home. One of the best ways to know whether you're buying good seeds is whether they come from a trustworthy
breeder. Over the last two years, some really exciting new breeders have appeared on the scene with excellent stabilized strains and seeds that germinate and grow well, so they produce great buds even if you make some mistakes along the way. We'll be featuring some new strain breeders soon (I have two in mind in particular), but I want to conduct some more research. Specifically, I want to hear which genetics have been working for
you! Please take a moment to reply to this email and tell us your current favorite strain breeder. We'll feature the most popular ones in an upcoming newsletter! Reply to this email with your personal favorite strain breeder!
