Issue #683 - Sunday, May 25, 2025 Hey grower! In today's issue... - Let's make some hash oil! One of the best parts of growing your own weed is making other fun and cool things from it. One of our favorite cannabis extracts to make is Hash Oil. It's a great way to feel like you're spoiling yourself. The best
part is that you can make it from trim (extra leaves after harvest) so you don't have to use your buds!
- Learn about some common seedling quirks! In today's grow journal entry, I transplant the seedlings we germinated last week into plastic cups. Check out some of the more... interesting seedlings!
- Grower Spotlight: My plants are all bigger than me! This weeks grower spotlight sees a longtime reader showing off their
prowess for growing massive, monster cannabis plants. He better not get them upset, because he's outnumbered by weed plants that are much larger than him.

Why the First Few Grows Can Seem So Tough… by Sirius Fourside See the full article here: https://www.growweedeasy.com/hash-oil-aka-rso-cannabis-extract-oil Table of Contents What is Hash Oil (Cannabis Extract
Oil)? There are several ways that cannabis growers can turn their homegrown bud into edible extracts. Some of the most popular are canna-caps, cannabutter, and tinctures. But cannabis hash oil may be the most useful weed extract.
Hash oil – also known as Cannabis Extract Oil or RSO – is a popular cannabis extract that many home-growers are producing themselves using their trim (trimmed off, trichome-covered leaves) or bud. Simply put, hash oil is the resin from a cannabis plant suspended in a tiny amount of solution. Ideally, the solution would be totally removed from the hash oil when it’s done. Why
is cannabis hash oil so great? - Hash oil is a super-concentrated form of cannabis that’s edible and smokable.
- Hash oil is simple to make at home with typical kitchen items. Specialized tools can automate the process.
- Hash oil is easy to store and use when kept in syringes, which can dispense oil in measured amounts.
This hash oil took about 1/2oz of bud! Yikes! (It was worth it) While some cannabis extracts use coconut oil, butter, or even isopropyl alcohol to bind to THC, hash oil is made with food-grade high-proof alcohol. Growers usually use ethanol or Everclear, but Spirytus, high-proof grape alcohol, or anything along those lines will do the
job. After the alcohol and weed are mixed, the mixture is strained and evaporated, leaving a thick, oily substance that is mostly resin. Since this “oil” is so potent, very little needs to be used at a time, which means that a small amount of hash oil can go a very long way. Hash oil can be eaten, vaporized, smoked, dabbed, or even used for topical applications. What’s with the name “RSO”? A guy named Rick Simpson coined the term “Rick
Simpson Oil” to refer to his style of hash oil. It turns out that RSO is much easier to say/type than “Cannabis Extract Oil”, so people tend to use RSO more often. We prefer “Hash Oil” as it’s more descriptive, but the two terms can be used interchangeably.
What Type of Alcohol Should You Use? Any high-proof (190-proof or higher) alcohol that is meant for human consumption will work. Although isopropyl alcohol can be used for topical applications, we recommend using food-grade alcohol even in that case. In other words, please don’t use isopropyl alcohol for this tutorial! You can use any 190-proof (or higher) alcohol such
as:
- Food-grade Ethanol (similar to what’s pictured below)
- Rectified/Neutral spirits:
- Everclear
- Spirytus (high-proof polish vodka)
- Neutral spirits (clear unaged alcohols that are distilled at or above 190 proof)
You can get your hands on at least one of these options in most places. If you have a local hydroponics store, it can’t hurt to call and ask if they offer ethanol for sale. Some stores carry it because it’s often used to make weed products like
hash oil. It’s also good for cleaning trimming shears.
Grow Journal Update - Seedlings Moving to their New Homes! Today I'm moving seedlings to new temporary homes in plastic cups. At this point, I'm still not sure which of the 6 seedlings I plan to keep for the grow journal.
I thought this was cool! A seed shell got stuck on a leaf. (4 days from
germination)
There's no need to pull the shell off. It's not hurting anything and pulling it off could possibly rip the leaf. All the green is fully exposed and I'm confident the shell will fall off on its own. Day 8 from germination - in the middle of moving to new homes!
Although all 16 seedlings survived, one of the Pink Kush CBD seedlings is struggling a bit. In the above picture it looks like one of the cups (bottom right cup) doesn't have a seedling. But if you zoom in, you can see it's trying... (Click for closeup)
I probably won't end up keeping this seedling since it's so far behind the others, but I thought I'd give it some time to see what it does. Sometimes the "odd" seedlings end up being the most interesting (if not necessarily the most productive)! This seedling is particularly photogenic, in my opinion :) I love the way those leaves look!
Why am I moving the seedlings to cups first? A grower could pick the seedlings they want and put them directly into their final pots to save this step. In fact, that's what I'd recommend most growers to do. But the reason I'm moving them all into plastic cups first is to give them a little more time to grow before I make the choice of exactly which six auto-flowering
seedlings to use in the grow journal. I plan to grow all the "extra" seedlings in a separate mini grow tent under a 100W LED in a Sea of Green style
grow.

theme of getting the most from your harvest! - Decarboxylation: How to Decarb Weed for Edibles - Knowing how to decarb your weed will not only help you make hash oil, but it's also good for other cannabis edibles like cannabutter and brownies. Decarbing is what makes weed into an edible,
though it doesn't make it tasty.
- How to Make Cannabis Tinctures - Tinctures are a halfway point between regular weed and hash oil. However, they're also good on their own! You can use strong tinctures with a dropper and a strong-tasting drink like root beer to get fast, potent effects.
- How To Make Your Own Homemade Rosin (dabs) - What's the difference between rosin and hash oil? Rosin doesn't use alcohol to remove the resin from plants, so it's an extremely pure cannabis extraction. The process involves using heat and pressure to squeeze all the good stuff from your weed, thus making one of the most sought after concentrates
available.
