Why Is My Weed Weak? (And How to Fix It!) by Nebula Haze
Are you ready to experience the ultimate high from your homegrown cannabis? Imagine harvesting the best weed of your life, with buds that produce the exact effects and potency you desire. It’s a dream come true for every dedicated home cannabis grower. Yet, sometimes the reality falls short, leaving you disappointed with the potency of your buds. This can feel incredibly frustrating, but don’t lose hope.
This is a cannabis growing mystery with a simple solution. Learn how to “strengthen” weak homegrown weed!
I’m here to reveal the reasons behind low bud potency, and share the secrets to consistently growing marijuana with your ideal potency and effects. Say goodbye to underwhelming buds and hello to a successful and satisfying cannabis grow that makes you feel proud to show off your weed to everyone. Without further ado, the biggest factors when it comes to cannabis potency are… 1.)
StrainThe number one contributor to potency is genetics/strain. Great genetics produce great effects even if you make lots of mistakes, while poor genetics produce weak weed no matter what you do. Unfortunately, growing seeds from strong weed doesn't guarantee similar weed at harvest. Just like
how a brunette isn’t guaranteed to produce brunette children. The genetics may not be stable, and you don’t know who the “father” plant was. Fix this problem by starting with trustworthy genetics. Many talented breeders create stable strains that let you choose the exact effects and potency. This means you don’t need to wait until harvest to see if your weed turns out good. Learn about researching and finding the right cannabis strain. There are literally thousands of great strains, each with its own unique effects. For example, Sour Diesel plants tend to grow tall but produce great yields with potent
buds.
Other recommended potent cannabis strains with high THC levels: - Planet of the Grapes by Ethos Genetics – I used to love grape-flavored strains when I started growing in 2008, but they got harder and harder to
find. I loved when I found this strain by Ethos. He somehow combined the delicious unique grape smell of the old days with modern potency, bud structure, and BIG yields.
- Platinum Cookies by Seed Supreme – Excellent bud quality and potency. Check out my full review here and also my grow journal featuring this strain.
- Purple Ghost Candy by Seedsman – Sirius’ favorite strain currently. It is literally impossible to get him to stop talking about it. See our full review here.
The Platinum Cookies we grew was a crowd favorite for its potent effects!
2.) Harvested Too EarlyCannabis buds are not potent when they first grow in, and they need time to mature before they’re ready to harvest. Not only that, buds harvested too early are more likely to give you headaches or racing thoughts. It’s common for new growers to harvest their plants too early and end up with buds that are weak or produce unwanted
side effects. Learn the exact time to harvest to get the effects you’re looking for. This bud was harvested too early, and as a result, the mental and physical effects were weak
AC Infinity vs Vivosun Auto-Watering Pot Bases This week I really started falling in love with using auto-watering pot bases. Check out my full grow journal entry below for more information. However, I am using bases from a company called AC Infinity, and there are more than a few things about their base that I would change. Several of you have written in about
an alternative auto-watering pot base, by Vivosun. It also automatically waters plants from a reservoir via wicking, but has a somewhat different design.
I'll be frank. The Vivosun version of auto-watering pot bases seem like a superior product in pretty much every way. At least, based just on what I can see from the product details, and my experience with the AC Infinity bases. Next grow, I definitely plan to try the Vivosun auto-watering pots. Why the Vivosun auto-watering pot bases
seem better than the AC Infinity version: - Huge port to add water - Vivosun version has a big port to pour in water, without needing to remove the glass water level indicator and slowly dribble in water (like with the AC Infinity version).
- Easy access to reservoir - That big port also lets you stick your pH pen or PPM meter directly inside to
test the water, or use a wet vacuum to easily remove the water. Where the AC Infinity port is so small I use a syringe to test or remove water.
- Square shape instead of circular is more space efficient. While the AC Infinity pots are 16.57" (42 cm) wide at the widest point, the Vivosuns are only 14.7" (37 cm) at the widest point, so you could potentially fit more Vivosun bases in a particular space.
- Bigger
water reservoir - Since Vivosun reservoirs are a bit taller and squared instead of circular, they hold about 1/3 more water (1.3 gallons with Vivosun vs 1 gallon capacity on the AC Infinity bases) even though they take up less space in the tent.
Am I missing any advantage the AC Infinity bases have over the Vivosun ones? Or are the Vivosun bases just better in every way? Have any of
you tried either version (or both)? Hit reply and let us know! I'm almost certain the plants immediately started growing faster once they started drinking water from the base.
Hmmm, should I do a future side-by-side experiment between watering plants regularly vs from an auto-watering base?
Week 9: "Sweet Dreams" Photoperiod Journal Check out the full grow journal! As I just mentioned, I really started loving the auto-watering pot bases this week. I was ultra busy, and for a few days could only check on the plants quickly. Yet the plants still thrived! Auto-watering bases kept plants happy, even when I only had time to peek.
Recap of the week: Here were the plants at the beginning of the week (flowering day 12) to the end of the week (flowering day 18).
In the above picture, I placed the red line at the top of the back pocket in the grow tent, so you can easily see how much the plants grew over the last 7 days. I had to move the thermometer from that pocket because I couldn't see it anymore! Check out the full week 9 grow journal entry to see everything that happened!
It was eventful this week... - Auto-watering pots saved the day! (actually, several days)
- Huge stretch - Plants took the word "stretch" in "flowering stretch" to heart!
- Nutrient burn - Got a touch of nutrient burn, even though I was using the Fox Farm nutrients at 1/6 strength! I wasn't too impressed lol
- Bud
development - All plants are fully flowering by day 18 from 12/12, but some are dragging their feet!
- And more!
Don't miss the full Week 9 entry! Happy growing, Nebula
Haze GrowWeedEasy.com Mandarin Cookies getting sparkly already! (day 18 from 12/12)
Blue Dream was late to the flowering party, but now starting to stack!
Do you prefer strains that stay small and flower fast, like the GG4 x Zkittlez, or strains that take longer to flower but get bigger (yet tend to have bigger yields), like the Purple Ghost Candy? Hit reply and let us know what you think!
